Lacquer thinners usually are blends. The relatively more expensive pure solvents frequently are extended by adding a calculated proportion of nonsolvent or diluent to reduce the cost. A wide variety of raw materials are available for compounding. Diluents include aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, while pure solvents include volatile aliphatic alcohols, esters, and ketones, as well as glycol-derived etheralcohols.
In addition, there are medium and high-boiling solvents which fall outside the above classification.
The principal difficulty in using diluents is that of balancing boiling characteristics and evaporation rates. In a well formulated thinner it is desirable to balance the total evaporation time of the diluents and the pure solvents. Also, it is desirable to balance the total evaporation time of the alcohols and the esters-ketones. By doing this, one ensures the composition of the final evaporating film.
