In making cork binder, the Zein is stirred into the glycols, with or without added glycerine to replace a portion of the triglycol. heating to 90-100C. helps to make the Zein dissolve faster. glycol solutions containing 20 to 30% Zein are the most effective for cork binders. use of glycols results in finished composition cork having maximum dimensional stability.
Plasticized with the proper glycols, Zein produces a binder solution that is water free and low enough in viscosity so that it can be readily mixed with granulated cork at moderate temperature in a conventional mixer. Generally, about four times as much cork as Zein binder is used.
However, this depends on the particle size of the cork, and be varied to achieve the optimum dry tensile strength in the finished composition cork.
A curing agent and frequently a catalyst to speed curing are added to the cork and binder in the mixer, as is molten wax for mold lubricant.
The entire mixing operation takes only about 45 min.
