Knife-grade putties are produced. They remain permanently pliable and soft and resist temperatures from-40 to above 200F. In general they possess excellent adhesion to wood, metal, glass, plastics, and paints.
They are used to seal and fill joints in storage bolted tanks for gasoline, oil, and various other solvents. Among other uses, they have also been used to seal pressurized cabins and fuel tanks on aircraft.
The above putty is an off-white color. With proper addition of colorants, colors from white to black can be mixed. Due to use of a large quantity of the cheap filler (calcium carbonate), the materials cost is very modest.
Mixing techniques are available to mix these putties on a mill without sticking, with the final reduction to a putty consistency by heating at 158 to 200F. Or, with a hot internal mixer, the whole operation can be accomplished in one step. |
