Charge to a 1-liter reactor 100 g watr and heat to 57 C, while purging with nitrogen. Prepare a pre-emulsion of the butyl acrylate/Styrene/0.2 g t-butyl hydroperoxide, blend by vigorously stirring into a solution of the surfactants (Sipex EST-30 and Siponic F-400) and 124 g water. Prepare a solution of sodium persulfate in 30 g water. Prepare a solution of sodium metabisulfite in 45 g water. Prepare a solution of Sipomer WAM in 15 g water. At 57 C, charge 15 ml of persulfate solution, 1% of pre-emulsion, and 6 ml of metabisulfite solution. Allow 15 min for seed latex formation. After seed latex is formed, charge the pre-emulsion over 3.5 h. Charge persulfate and metabisulfite solutions over 4 h. Add Sipomer WAM over 45 min. Add 0.2 g t-butyl hydroperoxide, in 5 g water, to the persulfate solution for the last 30 min of addition time. Polymerize at 60-65 C and hold at temperature an extra 30 min after all materials are charged. Cool and discharge.
