Separately mix Part A and Part B and then slowly add Part B to A with vigorous mixing. No heating is necessary unless it is desired to include solid organics in the oil phase. In this case, the oil phase should be heated to melt the solids before mixing. Emulsion viscosity depends, to a certain extent, on the amount of shear used to put the emulsion together. High shear mixers such as an Eppenbach or a stirrer equipped with a Cowles impeller are recommended. When mixing the aqueous phase into the oil phase, the addition should be done slowly at first to prevent inversion of the emulsion. After all the water has been added, the emulsion should be mixed at high speed for 5-10 min. Perfume can be added to the oil phase initially, or blended into the finished emulsion.
Notes: For emulsions based on Dow Corning Q2-3225C, the presence of a small amount of electrolyte in the aqueous phase is necessary for long term emulsion stability. Sodium chloride has been specified, but other electrolytes such as sodium cit |
