Formulae 1 to 3 yield dry, tough films that have good wet tack. All three compounds can be made by good agitation with no air entrainment.
Formulae 1 and 2 are compounded by addition in the order given. In preparing formula 3, the stabilized plasticized latex is added to the solution of polyvinyl Alcohol.
The stabilizing agents should be blended thoroughly before adding the emulsifier, which, in turn, should be dispersed completely before adding the plasticizer. The plasticizer should be uniformly blended in before the latex is added. Visual observation based on experience is a convenient control measure at this point. The latex should be added slowly and evenly until it is all in. In the early stages of latex additon, the mixture becomes more viscous and pasty, a typical characteristic of water in-oil emulsions. This is followed by a sudden and apparent phase inversion to a smooth fluid compound.
Stirring should be continued for at least 15 minutes after completing the latex addition. The time |
