Soap leaves are paper leaves coated completely with soap A
transparent soap made with a sugar/glycerine solution is used for this
purpose. The correct thickness of the soap layer depends on the right
temperature of the soap melt, which must be established by pretesting.
The transparent soap used for dipping the leaves consists of
Alcohol (95%)/21.0
Stearin/3.0
Refined sugar (cryst.)/5.0
Pressed tallow/7.0
Water/5.0
Cochin coconut oil/32.5

The fatty ingredients are melted at 50C. and added to the caustic solution/alcohol mixture. After the rapid saponification of the fat charge the aqueous sugar/glycerine solution is added and the finished soap strained through a cloth filter. Coating may be accomplished by dipping for small scale production or a mechanism which pulls a continuous strip of paper through the molten soap. the best substrate is a tough tissue paper, cut into sheets or in the form of strips or rolls. |
