All formulations tableted very well; however, the fairly low tablet strength may cause chipping or breakage in handling. If tableting pressure is increased, rate of dissolution will be decreased; an area increase at the expense of thickness may be desirable.
As the bicarbonate content increases, the dissolving time decreases and the pH rises. Comparative dissolving times and pH were determined by dropping a tablet into 1000 grams of deionized unagitated water at 70F.
When added to six gallons of water, 100 ppm available chlorine is present for sanitizing.
Precautions are necessary to exclude moisture from any source in formulations of this type since the effervescent action could be triggered prematurely. Anhydrous components should be mixed and tableted in an atmosphere of about 30-50% relative humidity and packaged in a moisture barrier material tempered to ambient temperature. Failure to eliminate moisture may cause "pillowing" or even the blowing apart of a package. |
