Completely disperse the "Carbopol" 941 in the methanol and neutralize the dispersion with the amine. Stir in the powdered steel.
The "Carbopol" resins are not generally useful as film forming agents or binders, but the "Carbopol" 941/di-n-butylamine salt is a very effective binder here. In this system, the di-n-butyl-amine is uniquely useful as the neutralizing agent to enhance the resultant binding ability and to improve the "Carbopol" film.
The suspension is poured into plaster casts, vibrated under vacuum to eliminate voids and dried at 180F in an oven with circulating air.
After drying, the molded parts exhibit unusually good green strength and excellent surface. No releasing agent is used, because the castings do not stick to the plaster mold. After sintering in a hydrogen atmosphere, the resulting casting maintains its excellent surface and displays very high specific gravity. |
