A 5% dispersion of "Baymal" is prepared as follows: In a high speed blender of one quart capacity is placed 300 ml of water and with slow stirring 16 g of "Baymal" colloidal alumina is added. Then 6.5 mol of 0.5 molar barium acetate solution is added and stirring continued for 2 min at high speed.
Then 180 g of dispersion of "Teflon" 41BX, containing 36% of fluoropolymer solids, is added rapidly with agitation at high speed; mixing is stopped when the dispersion has been added. A white, opaque, slightly viscous fluid mixture results. This mixture will settle on standing for a few days but is easily homogenized by gentle stirring.
The viscosity of this dispersion as well as its inorganic content makes it easy to apply as a thin paint or lacquer. After drying and especially after baking a few minutes at 350-400C, adhesion appears to be considerably improved on glass, ceramics and metals, compared to deposits of "Teflon" alone. |
