Dissolve emulsifiers in the oils and add the water to the oils with efficient mechanical agitation. then add the Carbopol stock solution followed by the required amount of amine dissolved in the alcohol.
A few tips on emulsion stability and possible compositional variations are in order. Inclusion of small quantities of the appropriate sequesterants and UV absorbers is useful in preventing light and trace metal catalyzed depolymerization of the Carbopol, and the embarrassing loss of viscosity which results. Care in neutralizing to just below neutrality is also helpful in emulsion stability. At the same alcohol level, dissolving the emulsifiers and oils in the alcohol followed by the addition of the water, Carbopol and amine will result in less opaque emulsions than will the method given. Additional alcohol or perfume tends to destabilize these systems so care must be taken to rebalance the emulsion when changes are made in the ingredients. |
