Warm the ingredients on a water bath to 158F (70C_. Remove heat and stir until congealed.
This base is white, homogeneous, and semi-solid, firmer than No.1, but with better slip when applied to the skin. It is especially recommended for mixing with aqueous or alcoholic solutions, or for salicylic acid and its derivatives. Aqueous solutions or water can be added to the extent of 10 per cent; alcoholic solutions should not exceed 5 per cent of the formula. This ointment with 6 per cent of salicylic acid will become softer, but will not separate after prolonged storage at 99F (37C).
The base is also a vehicle for zinc oxide or sulfur if they are first triturated to a paste with a small amount of propylene glycol, glycerol or "Carbowax" polyethylene glycol 400. Direct introduction of these powders into the base gives a finished ointment which is too firm for smooth application.
