Warm the ingredients together on a water bath to 167'F (75'C),
remove heat, stir and cool rapidly until congealed.
The base is homogeneous, white, semi-solid, and similar to petrolatum in
consistency, and is completely water-soluble. The consistency of the
base can be changed by altering the ratio of liquid and solid
polyethylene glycols. When solid medicaments are added, more of
"Carbowax" polyethylene glycol 400 may be needed; with liquid

Sulfa drugs are compatible with this base, but a yellow color frequently develops. Agar cup tests show that this discoloration does not in any way impair the antibacterial action of the ointments. |
