Reclaiming Used Crankcase Oil |

First heat the oil with live steam to 200F. Then, while agitating the oil, introduce one percent by volume each of N sodium silicate and 50% liquid caustic. continue agitating for a half to one hour. Maintain heat for two to three hours and then turn it off and allow the system to stand quietly overnight. Carefully draw off the tank bottoms and transfer the top oil to another tank.
At this point the oil should be about 80-100F. Stir slowly while adding one or two percent 66 Baume sulfuric acid and continue mixing for an hour or two. Again allow the acidified system to stand overnight as the acid sludge settles out. The top oil is then transferred to a still, mixed with activated clay (a half pound to each gallon of oil) and the lighter fraction is distilled off at 600-650F. The remaining oil is passed through a filter press at or slightly below 300F to remove the clay. This finished oil can be sold as is, or improved with additives which inhibit corrosion and modify viscosity or pour point. |
