An electrodeposit of tin may be hardened by codepositing copper or
antimony or both with tin.
An acid tin-alloy bath may be made by adding soluble salts of either of
these metals to the following fluoborate tin bath
Gelatin/1 g To liter
Free Fluoboric Acid/40 g To liter
\b-Naphthol/1 g To liter
Cresol Sulfonic Acid/20 g To liter
Tin/40 g To liter |

Copper carbonate may be used as a source of copper and antimony fluoride, as a source of antimony. One g/liter of copper will result in about 1% of copper in the deposit and 0.5 g/liter of antimony will yield about 1% of antimony in the deposit at a current density of 15 amp/sq ft.
In continuous use, the bath can be maintained by adding the following agents at the following approximate times; plating tests are essential for continuous control.
Gelatin: 0.2 g/liter once a week; \b-naphthol in alcohol to saturate the solution (about 0.5 g/liter) every 3 to 4 weeks; cresol sulfonic acid about 2 g/liter every 3 to 4 weeks. |
