In preparing the surface of a metal for electroplating, the properties of the metal must be carefully considered in determining the procedure to be used. Because of its brittleness, beryllium must be machined very carefully. A centerless ground beryllium rod which had a surface that appeared to be entirely satisfactory was subjected to chemical polishing. After only one-fourth mil had been removed, machining cracks were exposed.
Satisfactory electroplating on a surface thus damaged by machining would be impossible. Uranium, thorium, zirconium, and titanium, must be ground very slowly and with adequate lubricant or coating agent to prevent the development of heat-checked surfaces. Chemical polishing of zirconium has been successfully used. But chemical polishing of beryllium and electropolishing of thorium and uranium have been unsatisfactory as finishing operations before plating because they tend to open up subsurface defects.
