Alkaline derusting for removing rust and scale from steel by means of a hot strong caustic soda containing gluconate as a sequestrant is quite effective. Gluconates inhibit redepositing of removed scale.
The derusting operation can be carried out either electrolytically or as a soaking operation.
Because of its high effectiveness with iron in caustic soda solutions, gluconate is most generally used. Between 4 and 10% gluconate is added, based on the caustic soda which will normally run between 4 and 48 oz per gallon of derusting solution. A small amount of wetting agent is often desirable to assist in oil removal while at the same time providing a light foam blanket, reducing the evolution of caustic mist. |
