The space, time, and equipment problem for the production of distilled water on a small scale (car batteries, photographic darkrooms, laboratory reagents, etc.) can be eliminated by the use of a small monnobed ionexchange column which will give quickly deionized water of double distilled quality as needed. Such a column is prepared as follows: A glass or plastic tube with a small outlet at one end is packed with a thin layer of glass wool. On top of this, 200 g. of ionexchange resin "MB-1"* is placed, mixed with sufficient "IRA" 400* indicator resin to be visible in the mixture. Ordinary tap water put through this column comes out at the bottom deionized as the equivalent of double distilled.
As the column becomes exhausted, the "IRA" 400 indicator resin changes color from blue to yellow. When the color change has extended nearly to the length of the column, the mixture should be replaced.
