Refractory materials often lack cohesiveness of green strength. Gum tragacanth imparts the desired cohesiveness, plasticity, on troweling properties to ceramic bodies. The amount necessary will depend upon the raw materials and the desired properties. Usually 0.05 to 0.25% of tragacanth is sufficient.
In ceramic glazes and slips, tragacanth is used as a suspending and viscosity control agent. It reduces the penetration of the slips into porous ceramics and, as film forming agent, prevents pinholes. Chipping of the glazed ware prior to firing is greatly reduced by using 0.05 to 0.4% of gum tragacanth. The tragacanth is completely burned off in the kiln. |
