One half of the clay/Tio2 is added to the water/sodium hexameta-phospahte/defoamer agitation in a Waring Blender. The latex is then added, followed by the remaining. clay/TiO2, and the pH is adjusted to 8.5 with 10% sodium hydroxide. This coating color at 68% total solids is agitated in the Waring Blender at a Variac setting of 50. After 3 min the blender, a portion of the coating color is removed and tested for viscosity, shear stability, and paper coating properties. Approximately 5 ccc of the coating color is then washed through a 100-mesh screen as a coagulum check. The remainder of the coating color is agitated in the Waring Blender with a Variac setting of 60 for an additional 27 min and checked again for coagulum. |
