Hypochlorite Bleaching: Sulfite pulp may be bleached whiter and with less bleach when soluble silicate is added, than when calcium hypochlorite is used alone. Silicate can be employed with either single or multi-stage bleach operations. In actual practice chlorine requirements have bee reduced 20-35% by the addition of 1% "Metso" sodium metasilicate pentahydrate, with no loss in final brightness. One mill used 0.4% "Metso" granular, based on the weight of air-dry pulp, to reduce chlorine consumption by 15%. Whiteness was maintained. |
