The system Zno-Co0-Al2O3 is used to supply the majority of ceramic blues. A preferred blue is: ZnO CuO Al2O3 Greens are also obtainable in this system when the alumina and cobalt oxide are low and browns when the zinc xide and alumina are low.
Copper oxide may be used to form red colors-one due to crystals of cuprous oxide and another due to precipitated colloidal copper. Neither are used commercially as careful atmospheric control is necessary. A typical copper red glaze is: .123 .734 .143 This is fired to 2280F under reducing conditions during heating and under oxidizing conditions after fusion. |
