With certain types of coating equipment, it is possible and desirable to use a coating color of much higher solids than is possible on brush coaters where the total solids content is generally inthe range of 35 to 40%. This trend is especially evident in the increasing use of starchpigment coating colors for both "machine" coating and "Offmachine" coating at solids contents of 50 to 70%.
Although starch has been used in most cases as the adhesive for high-solids colors, there is increasing interest in the use of casein-pigment coatings at the higher solids contents. This is not a simple problem and many angles must be considered, including the preparation of the coating color, application equipment, drying procedure and finished-sheet quality and cost.
