The feel or "hand" of absorbent tissues, as well as rewetting properties, is enhanced by the surface application of one to three pounds of "Tergitol" Nonionic 15-S-9 or NPX per ton of paper. This can be accomplished by mist application of anhydrous surfactant, or by fine spray application of a solution (e.g., 10%) of the surfactant.
Although currently used wetstrength agents are not sizing agents per se, some of them do have a tendency to decrease the water absorbency of paper, particularly when rosin size of natural resin is present even in trace amounts. Both "Tergitol" Nonionics 15-S-9 and NPX are effective in maintaining the absorbency of wet-=strength paper containing melamine, urea, or the alkaline curing type wet-strength resins.
