By treatment with glyoxal, "CELLOSIZE" hydroxyethyl cellulose can be made water-resistant for use in sizing and for imparting gloss to paper.
Glyoxal can also be reacted with the hydroxyl groups in paper itself to improve wet strength, particularly when used in combination with "CELLOSIZE" hydroxyethyl cellulose. A 1-1 mixture of glyoxal and "CELLOSIZE" hydroxyethyl cellulose is recommended to impart wet strength equivalent to that obtained from the more widely used melamine resins.
The glyoxal-"CELLOSIZE" hydroxyethyl cellulose treatment is of particular interest in the wetstrengthening of paper towel stock, since the treatment causes no decrease in absorbency of the towel stock. An actual increase in absorbency often results. |
