Carefully disperse the Carbopol 941 in half the water. Next, add the sodium hydroxide while stirring. In a separate container, disperse the zirconium oxide in the remainder of the water, then add this to the Carbopol 941 mucilage slowly, in a steady stream, with agitation. A suspension formulated in this fashion had a Brookfield, 20 rpm viscosity of 2975 cps and a pH of 10.0.
It is very important to add the ingredients in the proper order. If the pigment is added before the sodium hydroxide, it will immediately flocculate. The pH of the neutralized Carbopol 941 mucilage must be at least 9.5 to prevent flocculation. |
