In a heated kettle with stirrer, seven parts of pure powdered soap are dissolved in 60 parts of hot water. To the warm solution add three parts of aqueous ammonia (spec. grav. 0.910) and then, with constant agitation., add a solution of five parts of olein in 10 parts of denatured alcohol. A mixture of 10 parts of magnesia, three parts of Paris red and two parts of paraffin (50-52C) is ground into the above emulsion. This mixture is made by working the magnesia and Paris red homogeneously into the molten paraffin and grinding the solidified mass.
Finally, the complete emulsion is homogenized by passage through a fine meshed wire net.
In place of the ammonium oleate formed by saponification of the oleic with the ammonia one can use two to 2.5 parts of a suitable, high active surfactant.
The pieces of material (flannel or highly absorbent cotton) are thoroughly soaked in the impregnating solution at 40C, passed through a wringer like cylinder press, and finally dried by passing through a dryin |
