Chemically, this is nitrogen triiodide. It is extremely dangerous and very explosive when dry. It can be prepared safely in aqueous ammoniacal solution and can be safely handled while wet. However, when the water evaporates, it should never be handled, because when dry it will explode spontaneously, or when touched with a feather.
It is easily prepared by diluting concentrated ammonium hydroxide with an equal volume of water. Use this to wet down half its weight of iodine crystals. Allow the mixture to react 3 minutes and then filter off the ammonia-water solution. While the black residue is still very wet, sprinkle small pieces, about the size of a match head, on the sidewalk or in hallways, where in about 1 hour there will be considerable traffic. The results will be quite startling. Be sure to wash the filter paper thoroughly as otherwise it can be a hazard when it dries out. All equipment used should be well washed, or allowed to stand, immersed in water.
