The following formulas are for pyrotechnic-type smokeforming compositions which are designed both for research and for practical applications. The large new class of smokeformers includes some 600 varieties covering about 60 different elements. Actual and suggested uses for a particular smoke are given with the formulation, e.g., No.
211 under "silver" is adapted to cloud-seeding; under "arsenic" the various smokes have potential in industrial fumigation, as is the case with "thallium" smokes.
Extreme caution should be exercised in making certain of the mixtures because of the hazard of explosion, or of the emission of extremely toxic smokes, e.g., those that contain highly reactive organic fluorides, arsenic, and toxic heavy metals. Compositionally, the new halogenic smokes and their sublimates probably include upwards of a dozen chemical varieties.
