Preparation of Pigment Paste: With stirring, add "Tamol" 731, "Surfynol" TG surfactant, K2CO3 and the pigments to 184 parts of water containing 65.5 parts of 3% "Methocel" solution. Grind in a pebble mill for 14 h. The viscosity of the paste should be 70-90 KU. For other grinding methods, adjust the viscosity as desired by using more or less water.
using a pebble mill, no color loss is noted if the "Methocel" is present during the grind. If part of the "Methocel" is added after grinding, some color loss is observed.
Let-Down: Transfer a weighed amount of the ground paste to a vessel equipped with a stirrer and with stirring, gradually add the acrylic emulsion Ethyl "Carbitol" and water to the paste. Add NH4OH if required to adjust the pH to 8.
The formulations as shown do not give foam when ordinary precautions are observed. If foam develops, "Surfynol" 104-E surfactant at .05 to .2% concentration based on the finished paint is very effective in elimination of foam. It may be stirred into the f |
