One half of the clay/TiO2 is added to the water/sodium hexametaphosphate/defoamer agitation in a Waring blender. The latex is then added, followed by the remaining clay/TiO2, and the pH is adjusted to 8.5 with 10% sodium hydroxide. This coating color at 68% total solids is agitated in the Waring blender at a Variac setting of 50. After 3 min in the blender, a portion of the coating color is removed and tested for viscosity, shear stability, and paper coating properties. Approximately 5 cc of the coating color is then washed through a 100-mesh screen as a coagulum check. The remainder of the coating color is agitated in the Waring blender with a Variac setting of 60 for an additional 27 min and checked again for coagulum. |
